Old, but New

Austeja Simaityte

Usually, I write about new animals I encounter, but this time is a little different...

For a long time, I’ve been visiting and tidying up the free cat room, where I’ve gotten to know some of the cats really well. There’s the jumping cat, always full of energy, and Ofelija, who is so calm and elegant. But one cat, Mikas, always stood out to me.

Mikas is quiet and keeps to himself most of the time. I’ve seen him so many times, but he never let me come close. He would either move away or stay on the other side of the room, just watching everything around him. I always hoped he’d come closer, but I didn’t want to push him.

Finally, today, something changed. Mikas was sitting in the middle of the room instead of hiding in his usual spots. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but I slowly reached out. To my surprise, he didn’t move away this time. Instead, he came closer and let me pet him!

It was such a small thing, but it felt special. After all the times I had seen him but couldn’t get near, finally being able to pet him made me really happy. It reminded me that trust takes time and patience, even with cats.

Now, when I think about the free cat room, Mikas has a special place in my heart, right alongside the jumping cat and Ofelija.
