Everything counts

Austeja Simaityte

I joined the "Lesė" shelter volunteers at the very start of October because they wanted to help animals. It might have been a change from my previous volunteering work, as I usually volunteered in mass events such as marathons, hikes, triathlons, etc., but I still wanted to help them. Therefore, the moment I got the opportunity to combine these two things into one, I immediately agreed.

At the end of November, I saw the request for volunteers for the "Lesė" shelter's stand at the "Užupio mugė". This was an event for a few animal shelters to collect donations for them, so naturally I applied. I was accepted almost immediately and joined the group of eight women to plan, organise, and execute our part of the event.

We started out by creating a Facebook post to advertise our participation and then another one to invite people to give us hand-made things to sell. They were all a product of great teamwork, although sadly, for a while we didn't get a lot of answers...

As the event was approaching, we hadn't collected a lot of things; therefore, a huge amount of items had to be contributed by one of ours and the leftovers at the shelter from other events. Even though we didn't have a huge number of objects, we were still ready for the event.

The selection of our items

The whole event passed like a breeze, as we only had to work for 3 hours, which is such a short amount for an event. But still, I had an amazing time with my co-workers selling handcrafts to collect donations.

In the end, we collected more than 400 euros in donations, even though we had the smallest selection of items. But for an animal shelter, every effort counts, and this money will be used in ways of caring for and saving the lives of these animals; therefore, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
